Dinner Blog 2- My Blacksburg Home (French)

Unlike the previous time with the Mexican theme, it was much easier to pair French food and cuisine and it certainly made a difference. The wines and dishes all paired much better to make a big difference in the overall quality of the dinner. The first course was a french bread and blue cheese paired with a Pinot Gris, followed by Beef Burgandy paired with a Burgandy, and finally a black forest parfait paired with a Cabernet Sauvignon.

Pinot Gris and French Bread

Course 1- French Bread and Blue Cheese with Willm Pinot Gris 2013

Wine- Aroma was of lemon and apple with some light hints of grass. The taste was dominated by apple with a very balanced acidity and a green grape/ lime finish. On it's own it was my favorite of the three wines.

Wine and Food- I paired the wine with French bread and blue cheese. The blue cheese certainly overpowered the wine, inserting itself in a weird way. I don't think I have ever had blue cheese that wasn't the dressing and I didn't like it very much to begin with so that didn't help. Ended up drinking the rest of the wine with butter. It complimented the acidity in the wine nicely and a more pronounced apple flavor.
Enjoying the main course and Burgundy!

Course 2- Beef Burgundy and Josephine Dubois Bourgogne Pinot Noir Grande Reserve 2010

Wine- Not much at all on the nose, maybe a little raspberry. Just not much aromatically at all. Hard to describe the taste, tastes of the woods with a fresh minty finish.

Wine and Food- The dish was made of stewed beef and mushrooms which was slow cooked in the oven with creamy soups and onion, which was then served over egg noodles. The wine really brings out the mushroom flavor in the main dish which in turn makes the wine more earthy and almost like a methanol taste. By itself the wine was very average to me, but in combination with the food it was incredible. Really complimented each other well, which was no doubt helped by the fact that half a cup of wine went into the dish. Easily my favorite combination, despite the fact that standing alone it was probably my least favorite wine.
Dessert and a Cabernet
Struggling

Course 3- Black Forest Parfait and Les Jamelles Cabernet Sauvignon 2012

Wine- Aroma was woody with some cherry components. Tasted rather dry with some hints of raspberry. Nothing overwhelming, a solid wine to me but not anything spectacular.

Wine and Food- The dessert was a chocolate cupcake that was chopped up and put in a cup, then layered with chocolate sauce and cherry pie filling, and topped with whipped cream. The fruity components of the wine were brought out by the cherry pie filling, creating a nice raspberry and cherry combination. It was probably my second favorite combination and my second favorite wine.
